September 2007

Melissa Carr, DBRL Director

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jo Sapp, Debbie Reed and Larry Nolte who ended their terms on the Daniel Boone Regional Library Board of Trustees on June 30. These volunteers, as part of the 19-member regional board, worked tirelessly to support our libraries and improve library service in our three-district region.

Sapp served the longest of these three, serving as a Columbia Library District (CLD) trustee for nine years. During that time, she played a major role in securing revenue for the construction of the Columbia Public Library, served as president of the CLD board from 2001-2003 during the building construction, served as regional board president and was a strong proponent of intellectual freedom. In the course of her tenure, Sapp attended 355 meetings.

Reed and Nolte both served on the Callaway County Library District (CCLD) board. Reed sat on the board for seven years, serving as CCLD president from 2003-2004, and Nolte served as president 2004-2005 during his five years on the board. From 2002-2005, he led the Ad Hoc Callaway County Public Library Facility Committee through the complete repair and remodeling of that library. Between them, Reed and Nolte attended more than 320 board and committee meetings.

On July 1, we welcomed three new volunteers to the DBRL Board of Trustees. Susan Breyfogle is our newest CLD appointee and Mary Ann Beahon and Mary Fennel are our new trustees from Callaway County. Along with Columbia Library District trustee Jim Loveless who was appointed by Mayor Hindman in April to fill a vacancy, this new group rounds out the regional board.
The members of the DBRL Board of Trustees not only collectively govern the library system by setting policies and making budget decisions, they also act as library advocates, promoting the important role libraries play in strengthening our community and educating citizens. We can’t thank them enough for their time and dedication to DBRL.
