Climate Reality Project Event and Resources

An Inconvenient TruthWe’ve been aware of climate change for quite a while now. The documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” — chronicling former U.S. Vice President Al Gore’s efforts to educate the public on the urgency of the issue — was released way back in 2006. A book by the same title was published that year, as well. As of 2017, humanity hadn’t yet solved the problem of our warming planet, so we got a reminder notice in the form of a new documentary and a new book, both titled “An Inconvenient Sequel.”

Movies and books can only go so far. So Al Gore also founded the Climate Reality Project, an organization whose stated purpose is “to catalyze a global solution to the climate crisis by making urgent action a necessity across every level of society.” The group trains leaders to travel around the world educating communities and advocating for clean energy policies.

But what does this mean for Mid-Missouri? How can we here in the Heartland learn more and get involved? The folks at the Climate Reality Project are so glad you asked.

On Wednesday, February 27, the Callaway County Public Library in Fulton will host one of the group’s speakers in a presentation for adults and teens. Gary Leabman will explain why now is the time for a “sustainability revolution” to implement renewable energy worldwide. The program will take place in the Friends Room from 5:30-6:45. Registration is not required.

For those who can’t make the program, but want to learn more about the issue, DBRL has plenty of resources in addition to the ones mentioned above. The book “Climate Justice” by Mary Robinson discusses how women around the globe are leading movements to address the climate crisis. While Raigorodetskii Gleb’s book, “The Archipelago of Hope,” talks about the efforts of a number of indigenous cultures in dealing with climate change. In “The Big Heat” Jeffrey St. Clair names names, suggesting where political pressure needs to be applied in order to start seeing results. Though they each highlight a different approach, all of these authors agree on one thing. The time for action is now.
