Party With the Stars
Friday, November 6, 2009 › 7-9 p.m.
Columbia Public Library, Gene Martin Secret Garden

Tonight two sets of beautiful and legendary sisters dominate our eastern sky, the Pleiades (Seven Sisters) and Hyades, all said to be mythological daughters of Atlas and immortalized as star clusters by Zeus. Actually, these characters can be traced farther back than Classical Greece, far into pre-history, some of them as "the muses," said to be originators of music and the other fine arts. We'll start out with an indoor program about all these famous siblings and then head outside for a look, weather permitting. Will we see the Pleiades as Tennyson did, "Glittering like a swarm of fireflies tangled in a silver braid"? You won't know unless you joins us. Hosted by Val Germann and cosponsored by the Central Missouri Astronomical Association. Enter through the Gene Martin Secret Garden, west end of main parking lot.
