Quick Start Guide: Overdrive Downloadable Audiobooks

Instructions for listening to audiobooks on:

Computer or Portable Audio Device

Initial Setup

  1. Download and install Overdrive Media Console (OMC) on your computer.
To check out audiobooks and listen to them on your computer or MP3 player, you must install the free software program OverDrive Media Console. This program manages the audiobooks you have borrowed and lets you read and transfer them to an audio device. Window 8 users should view these instructions on using OMC.
  2. Run the Windows Media Player Security Upgrade
If you are using a Windows computer, you will need to run the Windows Media Player Security Upgrade. This can be done in the Overdrive Media Console program by clicking on “Tools” in the menu bar and selecting "Windows Media Player Security Upgrade." You can also perform the upgrade online using Internet Explorer. If you are using Windows 8 and experience problems with this step, use the steps on OverDrive's help page.

Borrowing and Downloading an Audiobook

Navigate to our OverDrive catalog at http://overdrive.dbrl.org. You can click on one of the collection links at the top of the page to browse through different genres or enter search terms in the box. After searching or clicking a browsing link, use the filters on the left side of the page to limit your results by format and subject. Titles that are available for checkout have darkened headphones in the upper right corner.
