Instructions for listening to audiobooks on:
Computer or Portable Audio Device
Initial Setup
If you would like to listen to an audiobook on your Windows or Mac computer or transfer it to an audio player (iPod, Zen, Sansa, etc.) you will need to do the following before checking out an item.
- Download and install Overdrive Media Console (OMC) on your computer.
To check out audiobooks and listen to them on your computer or MP3 player, you must install the free software program OverDrive Media Console. This program manages the audiobooks you have borrowed and lets you read and transfer them to an audio device.
- Run the Windows Media Player Security Upgrade
If you are using a Windows computer, you will need to run the Windows Media Player Security Upgrade. This can be done in the Overdrive Media Console program by clicking on “Tools” in the menu bar and selecting "Windows Media Player Security Upgrade." You can also perform the upgrade online using Internet Explorer.
Checking Out and Downloading an Audiobook
The OverDrive catalog is where you can search and download eBooks and audiobooks. You can click on one of the collection links to the left (under Audiobook Fiction or Audiobook Nonfiction), or browse the featured Audiobook collection near the top of the page. Please note that Windows Media Audio (WMA) audiobooks will not play on a Macintosh computer. Most WMA audiobooks can be transferred to an Apple device if it is synched with a Windows computer.
- Once you have found an audiobook to check out, click the “Add to cart” link, then click “Proceed
to Checkout.”
- Enter your library card number and PIN (by default, your birth date in the format
MMDDYYYY).
- Choose the length of the lending period (7, 14, or 21 days) and click “Confirm check out.”
- Click the gray “Download” button under the audiobook you want to download.
- In the pop-up window that appears, select “Open with: Overdrive Media Console.”
- Select the parts of the book you would like to download if you do not want to download it all at
once.
- Overdrive Media Console will open on your computer and begin downloading the audiobook.
Transferring Audiobooks to an Audio Player
- Once you've downloaded the audiobook, plug your device into your computer.
- Select an item and click on the “Transfer” button at the top of Overdrive Media Console.
- Overdrive Media Console will detect your device and begin the transfer.
- Disconnect your device by safely ejecting it from your computer.
- Follow the device instructions to locate and play the audiobook.
To return an MP3 audiobook early, highlight the book and click on the Delete button at the top of OverDrive Media Console. Then select Return/Delete. WMA audiobooks cannot be returned early.
Phone or Tablet
Initial Setup
If you are using an iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Android device, Windows Phone device, or BlackBerry you will need to install the Overdrive Media Console app on your device before checking out and downloading audiobooks. This program allows you to search our collection and manages the eBooks and audiobooks you have borrowed. Please see the proper installation instructions for your device.
Checking Out and Downloading an Audiobook
- Tap “Get Books” (iPhone/iPad - in the top right corner; Android - press the menu button to see "Get Books") .
- Tap “Add a Library” and search for the library by name, city, or postal code.
(Tip: Tap on the star next to the name of the library to save for easy future access.)
- Tap on the name of the library to be taken to our catalog of downloadable content.
- Once you have found an audiobook to check out, tap the “Add to cart” link, then tap “Proceed to
Checkout.”
- Enter your library card number and password/PIN (by default, your birth date in the format
MMDDYYYY).
- Tap “Confirm check out” and then tap the “Download” button under the audiobook.
- OverDrive Media Console will begin downloading the book and it will appear in your library.
- Use the proper instructions for your device to return books early.
