First Thursday Book Discussion: One Read Runner-Up
Columbia Public Library, Friends Room

One Read panelist Marty Riback will lead a discussion of this year's runner-up title, "The Good Lord Bird" by James McBride. If this historical romp was your preferred choice for this year's One Read, don't miss this chance to talk about it with like-minded others.

First Wednesday Book Discussion
Callaway County Public Library

Bring your lunch and join us as we discuss this year's One Read runner-up, "The Good Lord Bird" by James McBride. Little Onion, a 12-year-old slave actually named Henry, is mistaken for a girl and forced to flee the Kansas territory with abolitionist John Brown after an altercation with his master. The adventures that follow, told in Onion’s vibrant and singular voice, take us from Bloody Kansas to the doomed raid on Harpers Ferry.

Heavy Medal: Mock Newbery Special Session
Columbia Public Library, Children's Program Room

Help us select our own winner of the 2015 John Newbery Medal. At these fun sessions, you'll discuss Newbery finalists and defend the book you feel is the “Heavy Medalist” of the year. Even if you can't participate in the full eight sessions, you're still welcome at this special session where we'll discuss "A Handful of Stars" by Cynthia Lord as a tie-in to our program series "Latino Americans: 500 Years of History." This powerful book explores a friendship between a small-town girl and the daughter of migrant workers. A past Newbery honoree, author Cynthia Lord tackles themes of prejudice and friendship, loss and love. Library staff will facilitate the discussion, along with Nancy Baumann, a local educator and previous Newbery committee member. Heavy Medal sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays on Sept. 9, 23, Oct. 7, 21, Nov. 4, 18 and Dec. 2, 16. Kids in grades 4-8. Registration begins Tuesday, October 20.
