Scavenger Hunt
Southern Boone County Public Library

Starting today, come pick up a list of challenges and clues for a library scavenger hunt. You can work solo or as a team to complete the list by Oct. 17 for a chance to win a Barnes & Noble gift card. We’ll compare answers at the first ever Ashland Tween Night. Ages 11 and older. Parental permission required.

Family Story Time
Columbia Public Library, Children's Program Room

Enjoy big books, stories, songs and puppets. Ages 2 1/2 (30 mos.) to 5 with a parent.

First Wednesday Book Discussion
Callaway County Public Library

Bring your lunch and join us for a discussion of Ben Fountain's darkly satirical novel "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk," this year's One Read runner-up. The novel takes place at the Dallas Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day game, where part of the entertainment is a group of Iraqi war heroes on their last day of a "victory tour" before returning to war.

First Wednesday Book Sale
Columbia Public Library, Friends Room

This extended two-day sale features oldies and classics. First Wednesday sales offer some of the very best books that have been donated to the Friends. The Friends also conduct sales every Wednesday in the library lobby noon-3 p.m. and every Saturday 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. All proceeds go to support library services.

Heavy Medal: Mock Newbery Awards
Columbia Public Library, Children's Program Room

We're staging our own mock Newbery awards! Have a voice in selecting our own winner of the 2014 John Newbery Medal. At these fun sessions, you'll discuss Newbery finalists and defend the book you feel is the “Heavy Medalist” of the year. Library staff will facilitate along with Nancy Baumann, a local educator and previous Newbery committee member. Sessions will be held Wednesdays on Sept. 10, Oct. 1, 15, 29, Nov. 5, 19, Dec. 3, 17. Kids in grades 4-8. Registration begins Tuesday, September 2.

Drop-in Internet and Computer Assistance
Columbia Public Library, Training Center

During these unstructured sessions, use library computers to apply for a job, write a résumé, set up an email account, get help navigating the Internet, study for a test with "Learning Express Library" or sharpen your computer skills with our excellent self-guided tutorials. Choose from Keyboarding, Mouse Tutorial, Basic Skills, Computer Basics, Files and Folders, Exploring the Web, Basic or Intermediate Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Presentations. For the tutorials, please bring headphones or purchase a set at the library.

Tips for Deer Season
Callaway County Public Library, Friends Room

Callaway County Conservation Agent Robert Lyons will share information about creating food plots to attract deer during hunting season, as well as ideas on how to keep deer from being pests in your yard and garden. He'll also respond to comments and questions.

Self-Guided Computer Tutorials

Learn at your own pace with these self-guided tutorials on the Windows operating system for beginners and intermediate users. An instructor will be present to get you started and answer questions. Toddler Time
Columbia Public Library, Children's Program Room

Enjoy stories, songs, fingerplays, flannelboards and big books just right for this age. Parental participation is a must. Kids up to age 2 1/2 (30 mos.) walking confidently on their own.
