Your child can read to a dog from the Show Me Canines therapy group. This is a unique and fun way to help improve children's literacy skills. All dogs are certified by Therapy Dogs International, Inc. and overseen by a handler during the reading sessions. Kindergarten age and older.

First Wednesday Book Discussion Noon-1 p.m. Friends Room
Bring a snack and join us for a book discussion the first Wednesday of each month. This month we will discuss "In the Land of Second Chances" by George Shaffner. In Ebb, Nebraska, things are pretty much as they were 50 years ago and that’s just the way folks like it. Plucky Wilma Porter runs the bed and breakfast, and she knows everything there is to know in town. Calvin Millet is the owner of Millet’s Department Store, a village mainstay for generations, but many fear that it—and the downtown—won’t survive his terrible run of bad luck. Wilma prays for a miracle to save Ebb’s special way of life, and one may have arrived in the form of a traveling salesman, if that’s really what he is. At this program you can pick up a copy of "Head to Head" by Linda Ladd to be discussed May 7.

Family Book Discussion 7-8 p.m. Program Room, Children's Area
Kids ages 8-12, bring your parents along for this discussion of “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” by Beverly Cleary. A great blend of fantasy and reality, this story follows Ralph the mouse as he ventures out from behind the wall of his hotel room home and climbs aboard a toy motorcycle. He begins a friendship with Keith, the human owner of the motorcycle, and many adventures take place. Library staff will lead you in discussion and activities related to the book. When you register at the Children's Desk, you'll get a copy of the book for kids and parents to read together.

The library provides free access to a variety of high-quality Internet databases that cardholders can use for study, in-depth research or practical help. In this hands-on class, learn how to use online auto repair manuals, legal forms, genealogy databases, full-text encyclopedias, archives of newspapers and magazines, plus much more. How to Set Up and Use Free E-mail 7-8:30 p.m. Training Center
You don't need to have Internet access at home to have an e-mail account. The library offers free access to the web. You just need to sign up with one of the many free commercial e-mail services. Twentieth Century Missouri Women You Should Know 7-8 p.m. Friends Room
Dr. Lawrence O. Christensen, Professor Emeritus, Missouri University of Science and Technology, will give a talk about some of Missouri's most noteworthy and successful women of the last century. Elizabeth Seifert, a Moberly novelist, published her prize-winning first book in 1938 and went on to publish at least two every year until 1979. Mary Margaret McBride was a radio personality during the 1930s, and, in 1941, NBC gave her a weekly program that attracted millions of listeners. Fannie Hurst grew up in St. Louis and wrote short fiction that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan and Redbook. Some of her books appeared on best seller lists and were made into movies. Annie Turnbo Malone manufactured and sold beauty supplies for black women, becoming a millionaire by 1918. She also created Poro College in St. Louis, ran a well-known restaurant and had an auditorium where stars like Marian Anderson, Roland Hayes and Ethel Waters performed.

Missouri Poet Laureate Walter Bargen 7-8 p.m.
Ashland's own Walter Bargen was recently appointed Missouri's first-ever Poet Laureate. Bargen will share excerpts from his latest books of poetry, "West of West" and "Remedies for Vertigo." An accomplished poet, Bargen has published 11 books of poems and his poetry and fiction have appeared in more than 100 magazines like American Literary Review, Iowa Review, Missouri Review, Pleiades and River Styx. He has also been the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts poetry fellowship. Stay after the reading for a reception in honor of Bargen's achievements cosponsored by the Southern Boone County Chamber of Commerce and Commerce Bank. Copies of his latest book will be available for sale and signing. |

The moon is nearly full tonight, so we'll start with a slide show about how our new, space-based lunar knowledge has helped us understand the Earth. Fulton native Henry Bellamann was born on April 28, 1882 and became famous for the novel “Kings Row." We're celebrating his birthday early by "Writing Out Loud." Kansas author Jerry Engler will read from his humorous short story collection "Just Folks," and local authors will read some favorite selections and join in a roundtable discussion of the writing life led by Elle Robb, author of "Denim & Diamonds." Once Upon a Time 7 p.m.
Once upon a time, after a particularly inspiring lecture about books by Professor Willis Kerr of Westminster College at the Fulton Women's Club meeting, a group of citizens determined that a free public library would be an invaluable civic institution. Members of the library movement began soliciting donations of books and money and formed a library association. On July 2, 1908, the first library in Fulton opened in rented rooms on the second floor of the Odd Fellows Building. Come hear the rest of this rich 100-year history of library services in Callaway County by long-time Fulton resident and Friend of CCPL, Carl Kremer. There will be a short Friends of the Callaway County Public Library meeting before Carl begins his storytelling. Don't miss the opportunity to join the Friends group during this 100th anniversary year!

The Mid-Missouri Storytelling Festival is a collaboration with Missouri River Regional Library in Jefferson City. Come learn about the importance of trees and woodland areas. You'll participate in a hands-on demonstration of tree planting and receive a Missouri native tree to plant in your own yard. Ages 6-12 and parents. Registration begins Monday, April 7. |

Learn at your own pace with these self-guided tutorials on the Windows operating system. An instructor will be present to get you started and to answer questions. If you're brand new to computers, start with the Mouse Tutorial. Or, pick from these lessons: Basic Skills, Computer Basics, Files and Folders, Exploring the Web, Outlook Express Basics, Basic or Intermediate Word Processing, Basic or Intermediate Spreadsheets, Basic or Intermediate Presentations or What's New in Windows Vista. Please bring headphones (the kind that work with a portable audio device) or purchase a set for $1.50.

Can You Dig It? 7-8 p.m. Program Room, Children's Area
If you dig rocks and dinosaurs, you'll dig this program! We'll discover fossilsand learn about what ordinary things are made from rocks and minerals. We'll also test your fossil-savvy by identifying rocks and gemstones and creating your own fossil-like rubbings. Families, ages 6 and older.
