First Wednesday Book Discussion Noon-1 p.m. Friends Room
Bring a snack and join us the first Wednesday of each month for a book discussion. This month we will discuss "Head to Head" by Linda Ladd. Romance novelist Ladd ("White Orchid") ventures into the thriller genre with this first in a series about homicide detective Claire Morgan who leaves Los Angeles for a beat in the Lake of the Ozarks area. As Detective Morgan investigates the bizarre case of a murdered soap opera star, she herself is pursued by her prime suspect, the charming Dr. Nicholas Black. Publisher's Weekly says Claire Morgan "is a smart, strong character" and "her tough-girl voice keeps the story moving toward a satisfying denouement with plenty of suspense and surprises." Party With the Stars 7:30-9:30 p.m. Gene Martin Secret Garden
Early May can produce the best conditions for wonderful warm-weather sky viewing, plus Mars and the first quarter moon are close together and high overhead this evening. First, we’ll see a slide show about Mars and the fantastic detail visible on the moon at first quarter. Then, if it’s clear, we’ll view them both through a large telescope and a big binocular and take a gander at Saturn, too. Both portions of the program will be fun for kids and adults. If you're a friend, relative or grandparent caring for a child age 5 or younger, then F.R.O.G.S. is for you. We meet each month to teach adults and kids about safety, health, emotional and social development, language, play, etc. A specialist from Educare Boone County leads these sessions. Your child will read for 15 minutes to a dog from Ann Gafke's Teacher's Pet Therapy Dogs while a handler oversees them. This is a fun and unique way to help improve children's literacy skills. All dogs are certified with Therapy Dogs International. Kindergarten age and older.
Still on the Hill Concert 7-8 p.m. Friends Room
Still on the Hill, the duo of Kelly Mulhollan and Donna Stjerna, performs mostly original, roots-based music interspersed with new arrangements of traditional tunes. According to Julie Koehler of Bluegrass Now magazine, Still on the Hill "command their instruments with power and grace, producing a sound that is both fresh and ancient at the same time." Rich Warren of Sing Out! magazine says, “The creativity and originality of these two blows through the stale air of singer-songwriters like a gale of genius." Toucan Jam: A World of Music 6:30-7:15 p.m. Program Room, Children's Area
This eclectic, musical duo is known for their fun songs and multicultural themes. They have been performing their exciting “whirlwind tour around the globe” program for over a decade to hundreds of thousands of children in schools, libraries and festivals all across the U.S. and into Canada. Their newest program has more interactive elements than ever and features a new band member, Tizzy Toucan, a puppet who tells exceptionally bad jokes. Kids will laugh and sing and dance along as Kelly and Donna evoke exotic locales and kooky characters with colorful puppets, costumes and every instrument from a ukulele to a digiridoo. Perennial, annual, biennial...what's the difference? Which flowering annuals are best for hanging baskets, for shade or for the heat of summer? We'll answer these questions and more while we discover how flowering annuals add a boost of color to the summer garden. We'll also discuss perennials, plants that come back year after year and provide color all summer long. We will learn about plant requirements for light, soil, moisture and the bloom period of flowering perennials. Master Gardeners certified by University of Missouri Extension will be on hand to provide information and answer gardening questions.

Genealogists and history buffs can learn quite a bit from tombstones. Not only can you learn who is buried there, but also about the time period in which they lived, their background and economic status. Maryellen McVickers, a genealogist with a Ph.D. in historic preservation, will share her expertise and provide fascinating examples.

We’ll also gather related books you might want to check out. Families, recommended for ages 5 and older, much older if you like, because you're never too old to enjoy a good read aloud.

At this question and answer session, you'll learn how to make your health a top priority and what simple steps you can take for a longer, healthier and happier life. There will be a variety of handouts on nutrition, health and recipes to take home with you.
