cal First Wednesday Book Discussion > Noon-1 p.m. Friends Room
Bring a snack and join us the first Wednesday of each month for a book discussion. This month we will discuss "The House of the Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer. This National Book Award winner is set in the not-so-distant future on a strip of land called Opium, between Mexico and the USA. Farmer's novel raises big questions about what it means to be human, what is the value of life and what are the responsibilities of a society. Readers will be hooked from the first page, in which a scientist brings to life one of 36 tiny cells, frozen more than 100 years ago. The result is the boy at the novel's center, Matt, a clone of El Patron, a powerful drug lord. At this program, you may pick up a copy of Abraham by Bruce Feiler to be discussed August 6.

If you were a bug, what would you be? We'll have props for you to use to transform yourself into a variety of crazy insects. Stop by the library with cameras in hand for this fantastic photo opportunity. This activity will travel to each of our libraries for a week at a time.

col Heart Gallery Lobby & Children's Area
The Heart Gallery is a nationwide effort to bring attention to children in need of adoptive homes. As part of Missouri's traveling exhibit, the Columbia Public Library will host more than 60 portraits of children currently in foster care. Volunteers from the Children's Division will be on hand each day of the display to answer questions about adoption. The display opens Monday, July 7 and runs through Sunday, July 13. Sponsored by the Children's Division of the Missouri Department of Health and Human Services in continuing partnership with the Adoption Exchange.

The therapy dogs from Ann Gafke's Teacher's Pet Drill Team will put on their dancing shoes and perform a freestyle musical show. Handlers will also share tips for children about dog safety. You may have seen these well-trained, happy, working dogs perform in various community events around Columbia or at the library's "Reading to Rover" program. All dogs are certified with Therapy Dogs International. All ages.

col "My Miracle Marine" > 7 p.m. Friends Room
Local author Connie McClellan will tell her family’s incredible story as described in her book, “My Miracle Marine, the Story of a Three-Time Purple Heart Recipient.” Dubbed “Lucky” by a Stars and Stripes correspondent, her son John McClellan was injured in combat not once, not twice, but three times. Connie’s lively and entertaining account may make you wonder if miracles really do happen. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

At this monthly program, we will read to you. That's it. Really. No songs, no puppets or crafts, sometimes even no pictures. Just come settle in to listen to chapters from classic children's books, longer picture books and newer favorites. All you need are your ears. We’ll also gather related books you might want to check out. Families, recommended for ages 5 and older, much older if you like, because you're never too old to enjoy a good read aloud.

This Day Lily show will feature floral designs by members of the Central Missouri Hemerocallis Society using the theme "Summer Games" in creative ways. There will also be more than 100 blooming scapes (day lily stems) demonstrating many unusual types, such as spiders and doubles, in a wide range of colors and patterns.

Examining insects at high-magnification reveals a whole new world of fascinating details. At this program, you'll get to help operate a scanning electron microscope to look at some bugs up very, very close! The microscope is run by the Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and available to us live via remote through the web. Scientists who work with the microscope will also be there live over chat to guide us and answer your questions. Our local facilitator is Kristin Simpson, manager of Enns Entomology Museum at the University of Missouri. The contemporary memoir about everyday people telling their tales has become an extremely popular form. Magazines and bookstores are filled with memoirs and a lucky few, such as "Angela’s Ashes" and "The Liar’s Club," have even made the bestseller lists recently. Come watch “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree,” a 1996 Disney featurette based on A. A. Milne’s famous Pooh books. In this classic Pooh story, our favorite bear gets into a big jam when he climbs to the top of a honey tree and meets a swarm of bees who disapprove of his “bee-havior." Just in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, MU Professor Emeritus of Geography Kit Salter will share some of his experiences traveling and working in China. He taught for several years at Tunghai University in Taiwan; he was a member of the first professional delegation of American geographers invited to China in 1977; and he has led many tour groups to China over the past three decades. A geographer of international reputation, Salter has published more than 120 articles and a dozen books.

col Kelly Werts on Guitar > 2-3 p.m. Friends Room
Kelly Werts' first musical love is the guitar, which allows him to explore all kinds of music and draw from the traditions of fiddle and banjo styles as well as working out original ideas. While leaning toward traditional tunes, Kelly’s expressively improvisational style leaves no musical stone unturned as he explores moods, rhythms and keys with the fluency of a veteran picker. Kelly has performed traditional old-time music on many midwestern stages as a soloist and with other musicians such as Connie Dover, Barton & Para and The Plaid Family. The Columbia Climate Change Coalition is cosponsoring this screening of the award-winning documentary "Everything's Cool," to be followed by a panel discussion about global climate change. The documentary is about a group of global warming messengers trying to find the images and language that will finally create the political will to move the United States from its reliance on fossil fuels to a new clean energy economy. The panel discussing climate change after the film will include Judy Baker, Missouri House of Representatives; Jan Weaver, Ph.D., director of Environmental Studies at the University of Missouri; Bill Allen, assistant professor and coordinator of the MU Agricultural Journalism Program who also worked 13 years as a science journalist at the St. Louis Post Dispatch; and Greg Suhler of Dynamic Predictables, a climate prediction firm with experience in a wide range of business and government areas. Monta Welch, director of Columbia Climate Change Coalition, will lead the discussion.

Many are familiar with Bob Priddy's stories of the past from his long-running radio segment "Across Our Wide Missouri." Now you can hear a bit more of the Kingdom's history and the rich history of library services in Fulton. Bob Priddy is News Director of Missourinet, a statewide commercial radio network, and the author of four books that focus on Missouri history. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the State Historical Society. Three of his books are based on his popular daily radio program and the fourth is a biography of Missouri's most prominent and controversial 20th Century artist and his great painting at the Missouri Capitol: "Only the Rivers Are Peaceful: The Missouri Mural of Thomas Hart Benton." He is currently working on three other book projects.
