Many of you know her music and all the words to her songs. Now you have a chance to see Laurie Berkner live in concert as we kick off this year’s Summer Reading program with the theme “Libraries Rock!” We’re hosting two performances on June 1, at 10 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. at the Missouri Theatre in downtown Columbia.
A former preschool music teacher by day and indie rocker by night, Laurie Berkner started marketing her music 21 years ago from her living room on her own label, Two Tomatoes Records. She is now widely recognized as a pioneer of the “kindie” music genre and was crowned “the undisputed queen of kindie rock” by USA Today. The Wall Street Journal noted, “Her music is distinctive because it speaks to kids without talking down to them, charming youngsters without boring grown-ups.”
Laurie has released 12 bestselling, award-winning albums, was the first recording artist ever to perform in music videos on Nick Jr., appeared regularly on the network’s “Jack’s Big Music Show,” and helped develop the short-form animated musical preschool series “Sing It, Laurie!“ on Sprout TV. Her music videos now appear regularly on NBC Universal’s Universal Kids channel and The Laurie Berkner Band’s YouTube channel. Laurie has written the music and lyrics for three off-Broadway children’s musicals: “Wanda’s Monster,” “The Amazing Adventures of Harvey and the Princess,” and “Interstellar Cinderella,” which debuted in November 2017. Laurie tours nationwide, performing both solo and with The Laurie Berkner Band. She has authored a number of books based on her songs, including a series of three new picture books published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. The first of these, the bestselling “We Are the Dinosaurs,” illustrated by Ben Clanton, was released in March 2017, and the second, “Pillowland,” illustrated by Camille Garoche, became available last November. Watch for the third book in this series, “Monster Boogie,” with illustrations by Ben Clanton, in summer 2018.
This special Laurie Berkner performance is partially funded by the Melissa Carr Literacy Through the Arts Fund established by the DBRL Foundation.
