by Sidney Larson, 1971
This acrylic painting depicts the Boone County Courthouse in downtown Columbia. Inspired by the American Regionalist style of his friend and mentor, painter Thomas Hart Benton, Larson has created several excellent murals featuring landmark buildings, notable people and important moments in the history of the city of Columbia and the local colleges. “Courthouse” originally hung in the lobby of the 1971 Columbia Public Library. It was repaired and restored by Larson in 2002 and now hangs in a new frame outside the Friends Room on the first floor. Sidney Larson is a professor emeritus of art at Columbia College.
The painting was donated by Mr. & Mrs. Hartley G. Banks, Jr.
