by Peter Chinni, 1979
In 1978, “La Colomba” was selected from more than 50 submissions by the Columbia Arts Council to adorn Guitar Square Park. This placement never came to pass, however, and the front patio of the 1971 Columbia Public Library provided a home for the sculpture. Constructed of stainless steel, “La Colomba” weighs approximately 2,500 pounds, is nine feet wide and stands 11 feet high. In 2002, it was placed on a raised granite base in a landscaped area on the northwest corner of Broadway and Garth facing the new library.
When asked to describe the sculpture, Peter Chinni (of Katonah, New York) said that “La Colomba” means “The Dove” and that the sculpture abstractly depicts a bird in flight. “Its forward-moving, soaring quality may be compared to the spirit of a progressive city.”
Funds for the sculpture were provided by the Missouri Arts Council ($20,000), private funding ($10,000), Boone County Community Trust ($5,000) and the City of Columbia ($5,000). The City of Columbia retains ownership of the sculpture.
