Quick Start Guide: Downloadable eBooks

Applies to: Mac or Windows computer

Initial Setup

  1. Download and install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your computer.
    To read eBooks on your e-reader (or home computer), you must install the free software program Adobe Digital Editions on a personal computer. This program manages the eBooks you have borrowed and lets you transfer them to an e-reader. On the ADE website, select your operating system (Mac or Windows) to begin the process.
  2. Create an Adobe ID and authorize your computer.
    In order to transfer your downloaded eBooks to your e-reader, you must create a free Adobe ID and use it to authorize your computer. This can be done at any time by clicking on the Help menu and selecting “Authorize Computer…” or you will be prompted to do so the first time you download a library book. If you have not created an Adobe ID, click on the “Get an Adobe ID” link. Once you have created an Adobe ID, return to ADE and enter your e-mail address and password in the authorization window.

Borrowing and Downloading an eBook

Navigate to our OverDrive catalog at http://overdrive.dbrl.org. You can click on one of the collection links at the top of the page to browse through different genres or enter search terms in the box. After searching or clicking a browsing link, use the filters on the left side of the page to limit your results by format and subject. You can also limit your results to items that are currently available by clicking on "Show me only titles with copies available" on the left side of the page. Titles that are available for checkout have a darkened book in the upper right corner.

  1. Click the cover image of a book to borrow the item or place a hold.
  2. Once you have found an eBook to check out, scroll down and tap on the “Borrow” button.
    Note: The default checkout period is 14 days. This can be changed by logging in to your account and tapping on “Settings.”
  3. Enter your library card number and password/PIN (by default, your birth date in the format MMDDYYYY).
  4. Tap "Download" and select the EPUB eBook format.
  5. Tap “Confirm & Download" to deliver the item to your device.
  6. In the pop-up window that appears, select “Open with: Adobe Digital Editions" or click the "Open" button.
  7. Adobe Digital Editions will open on your computer and begin downloading the eBook.

Returning an eBook

To return an item early you must use Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). Right-click or Ctrl-click on the book and select “Return Borrowed Item.” To delete the item from your reader, click on its icon under the Devices heading in ADE and follow the same procedure. Books in the Open EPUB format cannot be returned early.

NOOK Simple Touch or other E Ink Reader

Applies to: Barnes & Noble NOOK Simple Touch, Sony Reader, Literati, Kobo Reader and other compatible e-readers (excluding Kindles).

Special instructions for Sony Reader Wi-Fi

Transferring eBooks to an E-reader Using Adobe Digital Editions

  1. If you have not authorized ADE, you will be prompted to do so at this point.
  2. Once you’ve downloaded the eBook, plug your e-reader into your computer.
  3. Click the Library button in ADE at the top left. Your e-reader should appear on the left-hand side under the Devices heading.
  4. Click on the book to be transferred and drag it to your e-reader. You will see a green plus sign when it is ready to be transferred.
  5. Disconnect your e-reader by safely ejecting if from your computer.

Returning an eBook

To return an item early you must use Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). Right-click or Ctrl-click on the book and select “Return Borrowed Item.” To delete the item from your reader, click on its icon under the Devices heading in ADE and follow the same procedure. Books in the Open EPUB format cannot be returned early.

Sony Reader Wi-Fi

Initial Setup

All of the following steps are completed on the device itself. Make sure you have registered your device with the Sony Reader Store before starting.

  1. Tap the arrow button in the bottom right of the screen.
  2. Tap "Public Library."
  3. Search for the library by name, city, or postal code.
  4. Tap on the name of the library to be taken to our catalog of downloadable content.

You can tap on the menu icon (three horizontal bars) at the top of the screen to browse different genres. You can also perform a basic search by using the search icon (magnifying glass). Tap on “Advanced Search” to search by title, author or subject. You can also limit your results to items that are currently available by clicking on "Show me only titles with copies available" on the left side of the page. Titles that are available for checkout have a darkened book in the upper right corner.

Smartphone or Tablet

Applies to: OverDrive Media Console 3.0 for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Android tablets and smartphones, Kindle Fire (all models), NOOK Color/Tablet/HD and other compatible devices.

Initial Setup

  1. Install the OverDrive Media Console app on your device.
    You will need to install the free Overdrive Media Console app on your device before checking out and downloading eBooks. This program allows you to search our collection and manages the eBooks and audiobooks you have borrowed. It can be downloaded directly using the app store on your device.
  2. Create an Adobe ID and authorize your device.
    You must create a free Adobe user ID and authorize your device in order to download and read eBooks on it. On Apple devices, you will be prompted to do this the first time you open the OverDrive app. On Android devices (including Kindle Fire, NOOK Color/Tablet/HD), you will be prompted the first time you attempt to download a book.

  3. Tap the Menu button in the top left corner and tap “Add a library.”
  4. Search for the library by name, city, or postal code.
  5. Tap on the name of the library to be taken to our catalog of downloadable content.
    (Tip: Click on the star next to the name of the library to save the link.)

Borrowing an eBook

If you are using a Kindle Fire you can complete the following steps through the browser on your device or using a computer. If you are using an E Ink Kindle (black and white screen) you must complete the check-out and transfer process using a computer.

Transferring eBooks to a Kindle Wirelessly

  1. Click “Download” and select the Kindle format.
  2. Click “Confirm & Download.” You will be taken to a download page on Amazon.com.
  3. Click the yellow "Get library book" button on the right side of the screen.
  4. Log in to your Amazon account and select the device to which you would like the book delivered.
  5. Make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. (Kindle books from the library are not delivered through a 3G connection)
  6. The book should automatically appear in your library. (If the book does not appear within a few minutes, go into your menu and select the sync option.)

Note: If you are downloading a book to the Kindle app on a tablet or smart phone, it will appear in the archived items first. Go to your archive and tap on the book to complete the download.

Transferring eBooks to a Kindle Via USB

  1. Click "Get for Kindle" on your "My OverDrive Checkouts" page.
  2. You will be taken to a download page on Amazon.com. You will not be charged for the book, but Amazon will have a record of your check-out.
  3. Click the yellow "Get library book" button on the right side of the screen.
  4. Log in to your Amazon account.
  5. On the download confirmation page, click the yellow "Download now" button.
  6. Plug your Kindle into your computer.
  7. Find the Kindle icon on your computer when you are asked where to save the file. It appears in the list of disk drives on a PC and on the desktop on a Mac.
  8. Open the Kindle drive, click on the documents folder and click Save.
  9. Remove your Kindle from your computer and look for the book.

Note:If your browser does not ask you where to save a file you will need to change your browser's settings.

Returning an eBook

To return an item early, visit the "Manage Your Content & Devices" page in your Amazon account. Find the book you would like to return, click on the Actions button next to the book and select "Return this book." To delete the item from your Amazon account, follow the same procedure and select "Delete."
