Initial Setup

Tutorial: Installing Adobe Digital Editions

  1. Download and install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your computer.
    To check out ebooks and read them on your e-reader (or home computer), you must install the free software program Adobe Digital Editions. This program manages the eBooks you have borrowed and lets you read and transfer eBooks to an e-reader. On the ADE website, scroll down and click the “Install” button to begin the process.
  2. Create an Adobe ID and authorize your computer.
    In order to transfer your downloaded eBooks to your e-reader, you must create a free Adobe ID and use it to authorize your computer. After ADE has installed, a setup assistant will appear and prompt you to authorize your computer by logging in with an Adobe ID. To create an Adobe ID, click “get an Adobe ID online” in the setup assistant window. Once you have created an Adobe ID, return to ADE and enter your e-mail address and password in the setup assistant window.

Our OverDrive catalog (http://overdrive.dbrl.org) is where you can search for and download eBooks and audiobooks. You can click on one of the collection links to the left (under eBook Fiction or eBook Nonfiction) to browse through different genres. You can also search by title and author and limit your search to a specific format. Checking the "Only Available Copies" box ensures all the search results are currently available. Clicking on "Advanced Search" gives you additional search options. Books that are available for checkout have a blue button saying "Add to cart." Books that are unavailable have a red button saying "Place a hold."

  1. Once you have found an eBook to check out, click the “Add to cart” button, then click “Proceed to Checkout.”
  2. Enter your library card number and PIN (by default, your birth date in the format MMDDYYYY).
  3. Choose the length of the lending period (7, 14, or 21 days) and click “Confirm check out.”
  4. Click the gray "Download" button under the eBook you would like to download.
  5. In the pop-up window that appears, select “Open with: Adobe Digital Editions" or click the "Open" button.
  6. Adobe Digital Editions will open on your computer and begin downloading the eBook.

Returning an E-Book

To return an item early you must use Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). In the library view of ADE, move your mouse over the book you would like to return. Click on the small arrow that appears just to the left of the book and select “Return Borrowed Item.” To delete the item from your reader, click on the device icon under the Bookshelves heading in ADE and follow the same procedure.

Barnes & Noble Nook or other non-Kindle E-Reader

Applies to: Barnes & Noble NOOK, NOOK Color, NOOK Tablet, Sony Reader, Literati, Kobo Reader and other compatible e-readers (excluding Kindles).

Transferring eBooks to an E-reader Using Adobe Digital Editions

  1. Once you’ve downloaded the eBook, plug your e-reader into your computer.
  2. Click the Library View icon (three book spines) in ADE. Your e-reader should appear on the left-hand side under the Bookshelves heading.
  3. Click on the book to be transferred and drag it to your e-reader.
  4. Disconnect your e-reader by ejecting it safely from your computer.
  5. Follow the device instructions to locate and read the eBook.

Initial Setup

All of the following steps are completed on the device itself. Make sure you have registered your device with the Sony Reader Store before starting.

  1. Tap the arrow button in the bottom right of the screen.
  2. Tap "Public Library."
  3. Search for the library by name, city, or postal code.
  4. Tap on the name of the library to be taken to our catalog of downloadable content.

OverDrive appInitial Setup

  1. Install the OverDrive Media Console app on your device.
    You will need to install the free Overdrive Media Console app on your device before checking out and downloading eBooks. This program allows you to search our collection and manages the eBooks and audiobooks you have borrowed.
  2. Create an Adobe ID and authorize your device.
    You must create a free Adobe user ID and authorize your device in order to download and read eBooks on it.
  3. Tap the "Get Books" button at the top right of the screen and then tap "Add a Library."
  4. Search for the library by name, city, or postal code.
  5. Tap on the name of the library to be taken to our catalog of downloadable content.
    (Tip: Click on the star next to the name of the library to save the link.)

Checking out an eBook

If you are using a Kindle Fire you can complete the following steps through the browser on your device. If you are using an E-ink Kindle (black and white screen) you must complete the checkout and transfer process using a computer.

Transferring eBooks to a Kindle Wirelessly

  1. Click "Get for Kindle" on your "My OverDrive Checkouts" page.
  2. You will be taken to a download page on Amazon.com.
  3. Click the yellow "Get library book" button on the right side of the screen.
  4. Log in to your Amazon account and select the device to which you would like the book delivered.
  5. Make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. (Kindle books from the library are not delivered through a 3G connection)
  6. The book should automatically appear in your library. (If the book does not appear within a few minutes, go into your menu and select the sync option.)

Note: Library e-books published by Penguin Group cannot be downloaded wirelessly to an e-ink (black & white) Kindle. This is due to publisher policy. Please follow the instructions below for downloading and transferring them via USB. They can, however, be downloaded wirelessly to a Kindle Fire if you perform the above steps in your device's browser.

Note: If you are downloading a book to the Kindle app on a tablet or smart phone, it will appear in the archived items first. Go to your archive and tap on the book to complete the download.

Transferring eBooks to a Kindle Via USB

  1. Click "Get for Kindle" on your "My OverDrive Checkouts" page.
  2. You will be taken to a download page on Amazon.com.
  3. Click the yellow "Get library book" button on the right side of the screen.
  4. Log in to your Amazon account.
  5. On the download confirmation page, click the yellow "Download now" button.
  6. Plug your Kindle into your computer.
  7. Find the Kindle icon on your computer when you are asked where to save the file. It appears in the list of disk drives on a PC and on the desktop on a Mac.
  8. Open the Kindle drive, click on the documents folder and click Save.
  9. Remove your Kindle from your computer and look for the book.

Note:If your browser does not ask you where to save a file you will need to change your browser's settings.

Returning an E-Book

To return an item early, visit the "Manage Your Kindle" page in your Amazon account. Find the book you would like to return, click on the "Actions..." button and select "Return this book." To delete the item from your Amazon account, follow the same procedure and select "Delete from library."
