Michelle Carter, an alumna of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, will discuss her just-published memoir, "From Under the Russian Snow." The book is focused on the year she left her family and her position as managing editor of a San Francisco Bay area daily newspaper and moved to Russia to be a journalist-in-residence for the United States Information Agency. Her brief was to serve as a sort of midwife to a newly independent press, working with newspaper editors in the unique bubble of freedom in post-Soviet, pre-Putin Russia. It would be just a coming-of-(middle)-age story, sprawling across the eleven time zones of the planet's largest country, if life had not intervened. Who could pass up a story told by a woman of 50, who embraced a great adventure, on her own, in an exotic setting, only to absorb one of life's harshest blows? Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
