On October 10, the Columbia Public Library had its first ever “Pumpkin Parade.” Teens and adults carved or painted pumpkins based on the themes of reading, libraries or book characters. We invited kids to the library to judge and vote for their favorites. There were 12 book-inspired pumpkin submissions, and 217 folks came by to view them!
The three winners were “Where the Wild Things Are,” “Cinderella” and “Charlotte’s Web.” Congratulations!

On Friday, August 4, we were delighted to host a crowd of all ages for our 3rd Annual Cosplay Costume Con. This year, the event was held after normal library hours, and the participants used the lobby as their runway to strut their stuff! Everyone came dressed in their finest gear from Eowyn to Spider-Man, with representatives from nearly every pop culture fandom. Prizes were provided by the library, Distant Planet Comics, Ragtag Cinema, and Central Missouri Renaissance Festival.

We had a blast yesterday working with kids to create doodle-bots in our Wiggle-Bots program. Everyone was so creative, and the kids who participated came up with bots that were both quirky and ingenious. Browse the images below to see what these talented kids came up with.

On Friday, January 20 we hosted our grossest program EVER at the Columbia Public Library. I’m not sure if there is a scale to measure such things, but believe me, it was nasty! We had everything from boogers to roaches.
Just because we love the sickening and adore the nauseating doesn’t mean we don’t have a refined palate. We had our special guests, the world-famous hissing cockroach duo Leonardo da Stinki and Georgia Roach’Keefe, on hand to make one-of-a-kind art.
But don’t feel bad if you missed it–you can still do some of our stomach-churning experiments at home! Check out “Repulsive Recipes to Try at Home” for some of our favorite gross activities.

Do you like slimy, creepy, crawly, smelly things? When most people say, “Yuck!”, do you say, “Yay!”? Then you’ll want to join us to explore the science behind the stench and the reason behind the repulsive. Come to our Gross Out! program to make boogers and stay to meet the Madagascar hissing cockroaches!
Gross Out! will be on Friday, January 20 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Kids ages 7 and up will meet in the Children’s Program Room at the Columbia Public Library. To register, please call (573) 443-3161.

This past fall, the Columbia Public Library hosted its fifth season of the Heavy Medal Mock Newbery program. Youth in grades 4-8 were invited to join us twice per month to discuss possible Newbery Award contenders for 2016. At these interactive sessions, we discussed six Newbery contender books, and kids were able to defend the book they felt deserved the Heavy Medal Mock Newbery Award.

If you love both libraries and dogs you will adore “Madeline Finn and the Library Dog” by Lisa Papp. Madeline is a frustrated little girl who claims that she hates to read. Every time she has to read aloud in class, she messes up words and doesn’t earn a gold star.
Madeline’s mother does all she can to help her daughter feel more confident about her reading skills. One day she takes Madeline to their local library where Madeline meets Bonnie. One of the best things about the library is that you and your child can learn anything you want! Recently I’ve become fascinated with penguins. I learned that these flightless birds have flippers that allow them to swim in the ocean. I also learned that the emperor penguins are the tallest species, standing nearly four feet tall. The smallest is the fairy penguin, which is only about 18 inches tall. To learn more fun facts about penguins, check out “Penguins” by Penelope Arlon.
I also love to read fictional stories with penguins in them. One of my favorites is “The Not-So-Perfect Penguin” by Steve Smallman. This story is about Percy — a lovable, silly penguin who was not so perfect. “The Not-So-Perfect Penguin” is a heartwarming book about acceptance of who you are even if you don’t act like everyone else.
