DBRL Pinpoints Services During Long-Range Planning

Public library users depend on staff and collections, programs, computers, databases and facilities that meet their needs. Changes in population and the economy impact what families, students, seniors, businesses and others need from their libraries.

To assure a close match of its services with community needs, the board of the Daniel Boone Regional Library has started a strategic planning process that will cover its three library districts (Callaway and Boone County districts and Columbia). “The primary purpose of public libraries is to make a difference in the lives of the people they serve,” said Terry Higgins, DBRL board president.

Under chairperson Rosie Gerding, the planning team will focus on services, and:

  • gather suggestions and ideas via the web site, community meetings and interviews with civic leaders;
  • review existing data about DBRL, including usage and opinions gathered from the 2007 Community Analysis survey;
  • study economic and demographic trends from the three regional library districts;
  • study recommendations from DBRL staff about service priorities;
  • review the library’s current mission;
  • create a vision with supporting goals and objectives; and
  • present a recommended strategic plan to the entire DBRL board.

The planning team will seek public input through a series of drop-in sessions throughout the two-county region beginning October 15. Citizens can come by anytime 5-6:30 p.m. at these following locations to talk about future library services. If you cannot attend one of the drop-in sessions, you can share your thoughts by filling out our short, online survey.

“People of all ages and varied needs use one of our facilities, bookmobiles or web site every year,” said director Melissa Carr. “They come to the library or use our web site to find information or reading and listening materials. In addition, they come to attend programs, use our public access computers, share a story with a child, pick up tax forms, look at business and investment resources, read in a quiet place, receive homework help and much, much more. Our long-range planning will help us target the service and staffing that will best meet the future needs of our patrons.”

Long-time library trustee Ellen G. Miller, Lenexa, KS is the planning team’s consultant.  Previously she worked with the Missouri State Library, the Kansas City Library Consortium and Friends of the Rolling Hills Consolidated Library in St. Joseph.

Planning team chairperson Gerding will provide updates at the monthly DBRL board meetings.  The team will make a final presentation at the March 2009 board meeting. It will seek to adopt the plan at the April 2009 board meeting.
