From the Director - March 2010

Melissa Carr, DBRL Director

In the first few busy months of 2010, we’ve begun implementing the library’s strategic plan, translating the plan’s goals into new services to make your library experience even better. Many of you provided valuable input during the planning process, and we’ve responded with some exciting improvements.

We started the year by adding more open hours on Fridays at the Southern Boone County Public Library in Ashland. Then in February, we unveiled our new, smarter catalog. We hope you’ve had an opportunity to browse the digital shelves and add some ratings and reviews for items you’ve checked out. When you add this content to the catalog, you make it even better by helping others with similar interests find items they might enjoy. Later this spring (as weather allows), we plan to open the new staff parking lot at the Columbia Public Library, making more of the spaces in our large north lot available for our patrons. We are pleased to be able to respond to requests for more parking at this facility. In the coming months we’ll be announcing more new services and enhancements. Keep up with library news here at www.dbrl.org, or sign up for our e-mail newsletter or follow us on Twitter.

In light of these improvements and increasing use of library facilities and resources, it seems fitting that the theme of this year’s National Library Week is “Communities Thrive @ Your Library.” Please help us celebrate during the week of April 11-17 by trying something new at DBRL. Explore Byki, a language learning service that is one of the most recent additions to our online reference tools. Bring your laptop to the library nearest you and enjoy the free wireless Internet access. Check out materials in a format that is new to you, such as a Playaway or a downloadable audiobook. Or, learn a new skill by taking advantage of the self-guided computer tutorials in Columbia and Fulton and coming soon to Ashland.

Following National Library Week, we have the opportunity to celebrate our volunteers during National Volunteer Week, April 18-24. We are fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers to thank, including our board members who put in many hours of service every month governing the library system, the members of the DBRL Foundation and our fabulous Friends from all three libraries. Finally, we’d like to thank all of you who donate books to our Friends organizations and buy books at their sales, the proceeds of which directly support the services your library offers.
