Re-Carpeting Underway at Columbia Public Library
The re-carpeting project at the Columbia Public Library is underway. All areas on the public and staff side will be re-carpeted, except for the Virginia G. Young Room on the second floor and a back stairwell, mostly used by staff.
The library doesn’t plan to close during this major project that is expected to go into July. Small sections will be done at a time, allowing patrons to continue using the library. At times, some of the collections and computers will be unavailable. Patrons are encouraged to ask for help if they can’t find what they need, or place a hold on the item for pick up at a later time. Some patrons may find it convenient to use the Southern Boone County Public Library in Ashland, also part of Daniel Boone Regional Library.
Some of the program locations will need to be changed as the project rolls forth. Library staff will notify patrons of room changes on this site, through social media and in-library signage.
The carpet being replaced is original to the building, which opened in 2002. Patron counts, many times, exceed 2,000 people a day. “With 4,000 feet walking across our carpet every day, you can see where areas of the carpet have worn and frayed. Replacing the carpet not only will make the library look nicer, it will also rid our library of potential tripping hazards,” said Melissa Carr, Daniel Boone Regional Library director.
“While we’re in this process, we’re taking advantage of this disruption to make some changes to the first floor,” added Carr. “We’re adding a new public training room, installing more self-check stations and adding a new seating area in the new books section.”
Daniel Boone Regional Library serves both Boone and Callaway Counties with libraries in Ashland, Columbia and Fulton and bookmobiles that travel to other county areas.
Local firm Professional Contractors & Engineers (PCE) is the general contractor working on this project.
