Reckless: The Life of Richard Gentry, Columbia's First Citizen
Tuesday, January 14 › 7-8 p.m.
Columbia Public Library, Friends Room
Richard Gentry was the first mayor of Columbia and arguably its founder. By turns a military deserter, a land speculator, an accused murderer, a hired gun on the Santa Fe trail, a tavern keeper, a state senator, a horse-race gambler and a major general, he died in a Florida swamp fighting against the Seminoles. Presenter Doug Hunt will talk about Gentry's colorful life, back when Columbia was part of the Wild West and counted some fiery spirits among its citizens.
