Jane Smiley Visits Columbia April 8
ReadMOre, the statewide community reading project, has chosen the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "A Thousand Acres" as its book this year, and ReadMOre is bringing author Jane Smiley to the Columbia Public Library on April 8 for a reading, discussion and book signing. The library will also host a discussion of "A Thousand Acres" led by MU professor of English George Justice Thursday, April 9.
One Read Community-Wide Reading Program
Vote now through April 17 for either "The Air We Breathe" by Andrea Barrett or "Unaccustomed Earth" by Jhumpa Lahiri to be the library's community reading book for 2009. Both of this year's finalists are widely acclaimed pieces of fiction. Barrett's novel has a historical setting, taking place in a tuberculosis sanitarium in 1916. And Lahiri's collection of short stories explores cultural and family tensions. The winning book will be announced May 19; activities, book discussions and possibly an author visit will be planned for September.
Most Popular Books List
See what books are most popular right here in our community. The weekly list of the library's most popular titles, which is published in the Columbia Daily Tribune, is also available on the web with links to our catalog so you can see if the book is available or get on the holds list. We track the most popular fiction for adults, teens and children and nonfiction for adults.
Near the end of each month, our librarians write a column for the Columbia Daily Tribune with new and recommended titles on wide-ranging topics. February's article covered Ireland and Irish authors; the March column presents titles related to sustainability and the economy. You can read these archived articles on the library's site, and the more recent articles include links to our catalog and an extra section of related links at the end.
