Summer Reading 2010
The library’s summer reading program is a fun way to stay engaged in reading and learning over the summer. The program is free and there are versions for all ages, from the youngest babies to kids, teens and even a new program for adults.
This year’s themes are all about water, so get ready to dive in at whatever level suits you and your family! When you sign up, you’ll get one of our new DBRL library card wallets (as supplies last).
Be sure to also check out our special Summer Reading subject guide with suggestions for all sorts of summertime fun.
Little Splashers
Birth to Age 4 / June 7-August 7
Parents will get a calendar and stickers to use as you read with your children and do simple activities like blowing bubbles. Complete the program, and, beginning July 6, you’ll receive a free book.
Make a Splash, Read!
Ages 4-12 / June 7-August 7
Kids who sign up to make a splash will be challenged to read for 20 hours and do 10 of our suggested water-related activities. Check back in at the library over the summer to attend programs, get more books and show us your progress. If you complete the program, you’ll get a library water bottle (available starting July 6).
Enjoy some outtakes from the puppet movies on our Make a Splash activity poster.
Group Summer Reading
Child care centers, clubs, etc. / June 7-August 7
We’ve put together a special version of summer reading that’s easy to do with a small group of kids like a child-care center or a scout troop. Do eight of the suggested activities together, and you’ll receive some free books and a small reward for every participant.
Make Waves Teen Reading Challenge
Teens / June 7-August 7
Teens who sign up will be challenged to read for 20 hours, share three book reviews and do seven of our suggested “wave-making” activities. Get your card punched as you go, and when you finish you’ll get a library water bottle and be entered in a drawing for MP3 players and other rewards.
Books by Snail
Kindergarten-Sixth Grade, County Schools / June 1-August 20
Books by Snail allows kids to check out books and participate in Summer Reading through the mail. Any child who goes to school in Auxvasse, Hallsville, Harrisburg, Kingdom City, Holts Summit, Mokane, New Bloomfield, Sturgeon or Williamsburg is eligible. Ask about it at school or sign up online starting May 17.
Water Your Mind *New!*
Adults / June 14-August 14
Why should kids have all the fun? While you’re at the library picking up your next great read, take a moment to register for the Water Your Mind adult summer reading program. When you put in your name, you’ll get a booklet with a calendar of events and a library card wallet. Share your reviews of what you’re reading, and you’ll be entered in weekly drawings to win book store gift certificates.
