Compose a Summer of Color

We’re calling all hands to help create a colorful art installation for Summer Reading. You’ll make a unique piece of art by weaving colorful yarn around discarded music CDs, then your creation will be joined to all the others. You can watch as the installation grows and changes with each addition. Ages 10 and older. Registration required. To sign up, call (573) 443-3161.

Escape Room: Curse of the Mummy
Friday, June 8, 2-3 p.m. -OR- 4-5 p.m.
Southern Boone County Public Library
During an archaeological dig, you come across a box covered in hieroglyphs which you know must hold something of incredible value. Using your ingenuity, you and your group will solve puzzles to try to break into the box and out of the room. But be careful! If you make a mistake, you might doom everyone in the library to a horrific curse! Ages 12 and older. Registration required. To sign up, call (573) 657-7378.

DBRL Rocks
Have you spied some of the many colorful painted rocks hiding around our parks and public areas? Get in on the fun and paint a rock of your own to hide! We will supply the rocks and paint, and you supply the creativity. Ages 5-adult. No registration required.

Teen Photo Contest
Begins Tuesday, June 12
To celebrate this year’s Summer Reading theme, “Libraries Rock,” we invite teens to capture images of how music inspires your life. Enter by July 27 for a chance to win a Barnes & Noble gift card. Free Film Screening: “Breaking a Monster”

As this documentary by Luke Meyer begins, the three members of the band Unlocking the Truth are in junior high. They spend their weekends playing a blend of heavy metal and speed punk in Times Square and have gained a following. They bring on a 70-year-old industry veteran as a manager, and soon they land a $1.8 million record deal. Even as they move rapidly towards becoming professional musicians, the boys are also taking their first steps into the complexities of adulthood. (2016, 92 minutes) Adults and youth ages 12 and older. No registration required.

Rock Walk: Devil’s Icebox Trail & Connor’s Cave
Saturday, June 23 › 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Columbia, Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, Devil’s Icebox Trailhead off Highway 163
A naturalist from Missouri State Parks will guide us on a hike inside Connor’s Cave (at Devil’s Icebox) and the rock bridge, and share information about rocks (limestone, flint, fossils), caves and the animals that live in them. Expect to get your feet wet and wear close-toed tennis shoes or boots. Bring a good flashlight to penetrate the darkness. Helmets provided. Canceled if raining. Adults and ages 8 and older.
