"Destiny" by Cathy Shen Elya shook her head, she had try real hard to keep her mind on what Professor Black was saying. It was just not possible, curses and counter-curses were just about the most boring subject there was, you had to do all kinds of research before you could really try the curse. Elya though, had decided long ago that it was a small price to the wonderful life here in the Spell Caster’s hidden world. It was not only where there was a little magic around every corner but also where she had real friends. Everyone here had a supernatural Gift, she could make things happen just by thinking about it .There was just a tiny hole though, in the perfection of this life, Elya has no memories, not a single piece of information to her past. The only clue was the gold ring that was said to have been her finger when she was found outside the central palace’s door. It showed a fancy picture of a wand with a crown around it. Elya had been to the Wise Woman many times and gotten no answer at all, but Elya’s mind had always told her that the Wise Woman knew more than she was willing to tell. It was the reason Elya was going again tonight, something told her that she was about to start a very important journey. As the ringing of the end class bell started, Elya shook off the thought, not knowing how soon it was going to come back. The sunset that evening was beautiful, but Elya didn’t stop to look, she was hoping to get to the Wise Woman’s warm and cheerful cottage before the evening coldness caught up with her. As Elya approached the little cottage with the welcoming yellow glow coming from its windows, she felt like there were at least twenty butterflies in her stomach. Elya had only knocked once when the door was opened by an old lady, she had a worn wrinkled face, kind blue eyes, and wavy, snow white hair hanging loosely around her. This was the oldest and most knowing person that lived in Elya’s village. "Respected Wise Woman, I have come to ask about my past because I feel that you were not willing to tell me all that you know before.” Elya said. There was complete silence for a few minutes. Elya looked into the Wise Woman’s old face, trying to guess the secrets that lay hidden behind. Finally, the old woman said, "The time has come, Elya. Put on your sheepskin cape and follow me.’’ As they stepped out of the cottage, a chilly wind brushed pass them. It was a clear night, millions of stars glittered in the inky black sky, and the moon was shining brightly, casting a silvery light upon the two. They walked on for what seemed like ages. Just as Elya’s foot was starting to hurt, the Wise Woman suddenly stopped. It was very dark here. The tall tree branches blocked the moon and stars. They could hear the hooting of a distant owl. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, Elya saw an ancient cave before them. She shuddered at the thought of going inside but had no choice but to follow when the Wise Woman started towards the cave. Once they were inside, Elya couldn’t help but gasp. It was a magnificent sight, everywhere there were crystals of all colors, like thousands of mirrors around them. As they walked on, the cave grew narrower and narrower into a tunnel. After a while, they got to the end where there was a large chamber brightly lit by hundreds of torches on the stone walls. In the middle of the room stood a towering mirror, so clear with no one smudge on it and framed in fancy carved gold. The Wise Woman stepped in front of it. At first nothing happened, then she began to change, the wrinkles disappeared, her white hair turned black. Soon the old lady had turned into a beautiful young woman. "Who are you?” it was all Elya could say. “I am Destiny itself. This is the Mirror of Truth. I’m in this form and can answer any question when I’m in front of the mirror.” She replied. So Elya just asked, "who am I?” Destiny thought for a minute, then said," You’re the daughter of the Sun and Moon. The ring you’re wearing means power. You’re going to be the most powerful witch ever known to time, whether you will be good or evil I do not know.” Then she just vanished. Elya smiled, she had understood. It’s not really your destiny that changes you, but the choices you make.
