Q: What is the Read to Succeed Adult Basic Literacy Program?
A: The Read to Succeed program aims to improve the literacy skills of adults in our community, focusing on reading, writing and comprehension. Volunteers will work with adults (18+) to help them develop these essential skills, empowering them to improve their personal and professional lives.

Q: What are the time commitments for volunteers?
A: Volunteers are asked to commit to tutoring 1-2 hours per week. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to spend 2 hours a week outside of tutoring for preparation or reviewing materials. We recommend a weekly commitment, but we are flexible depending on your availability.

A: All new volunteers will be required to attend an orientation session where they will learn about the program structure, expectations and instructional methods. Orientation will also cover the curriculum and how to effectively assess and tutor students. Volunteer training materials will be provided, including resources from New Readers’ Press.

Q: How will I be paired with a student?
A: Volunteers will be matched with a student based on their literacy needs, assessment results and the volunteer’s availability. The matching process ensures that each volunteer is paired with a student at an appropriate reading level, and personalized learning goals are developed to guide the sessions.

Q: What qualifications do I need to be a volunteer tutor?
A: Volunteers should have a passion for reading, patience, and a desire to help others succeed. While previous tutoring experience is preferred, it is not required. Strong communication skills and a positive, encouraging attitude are essential to create a supportive learning environment.

A: Yes, we offer both in-person and virtual tutoring options. Depending on your availability and preference, you can conduct tutoring sessions via video calls or meet students in person at designated library locations.
