Bring the Ocean to You!

Under the OceanSummer is heating up, and unfortunately for us, mid-Missouri is about a thousand miles away from the nearest sunny ocean beach. But the library is here to help! Check out these books about the ocean and all the creatures that inhabit it.

Under the Ocean” by Anouck Boisrobert is a beautiful pop-up book that takes a look at life above and below the surface of the ocean. As readers open the book, the delicate and detailed pop-ups open out and divide the pages between what’s above the surface – boats, fishermen and  icebergs – and what’s below – schools of fish, coral reefs and scuba divers.

I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean” by Kevin Sherry tells the story of a giant squid who likes to brag about being the biggest thing in the ocean – until he isn’t. This book is not only great for learning names of ocean-dwelling animals, but it also does a great job of teaching concepts such as big vs. small and opposites.

Down, Down, DownDown, Down, Down: A Journey to the Bottom of the Sea” by Steve Jenkins takes readers from the very surface of the ocean to its deepest, darkest depths. Quickly leaving the behind sharks and sea turtles of the surface, this book explores the mysteries of the deep sea and introduces readers to some the strangest creatures on the planet.
