Paint Along: Mini Snowman

Guided paintingI just love painting! There’s something so satisfying about turning a blank canvas into a unique piece of art. I used to go to guided painting classes all the time—that is, until I bought all of the supplies to paint at home. All of this practice has given me the skills I need to guide a painting class for you!

You can paint along with me on the DBRL YouTube channel to make your own mini snowman. It’s simple enough for young kids, but it’s also a lovely painting for teens and adults to try!

Snowman painting

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Canvas. I used a 4×4 inch canvas.
  • Ribbon. I attached a small ribbon to the back of my canvas so I could hang it up when I finished.
  • Acrylic paint. I used the following colors and mixed them to make other colors:
    • White
    • Black
    • Blue
    • Red
    • Yellow
  • Brush. I used a small flat brush for most of the painting.
  • Toothpick. A toothpick helped me with the tiny details.
  • Cup of water. You’ll need to rinse your brush!
  • Towel. You’ll want to rinse and squeeze your brushes between each color.
  • Paper plate. I used a paper plate to mix my colors.

Optional supplies:

  • Hair dryer. You can use a hair dryer to make your dry time a little faster.
  • Apron and/or drop cloth. I used acrylic paint, which is sometimes difficult to get out of fabric. If you are a messy painter, you may want to cover up anything you don’t intend to paint.
  • Snacks! This painting will take you 20-30 minutes to complete. Creativity takes a lot of brainpower, so you’ll want to have hot cocoa and candy canes at the ready!

We would love to see your finished artwork. Snap a pic and send it to us at kids@dbrl.org.

Happy painting!
