Tonya Hays-Martin was born and raised in Fulton and still calls it home. She and her husband live near Calwood, known locally as the Crossroads of the World. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her two adult sons and one amazing granddaughter. As a librarian, she loves libraries, and has served on the DBRL Board of Trustees for 16 years.

What were your favorite books from your childhood?

The “Little House” books really captured my imagination, along with the “Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle” and “Pippi Longstocking” series.

What is one of your cherished personal library memories?

Summer programs at the library were the best. My sister and I entered the talent show one year and it was so fun!

What book would you recommend others read and why?

People should read whatever is interesting to them. I would recommend reading outside of your comfort zone — try new genres and formats. I’m enjoying novels in verse and audiobooks at the moment.

Why are libraries important to our community?

Libraries are one of the few places where everyone is welcome and everyone belongs. The library offers so many vital services and provides a place where people can be a part of a larger community.

Name one library accomplishment that stands out to you?

My proudest moments as a library trustee are passing the tax levy increase in 2020 for Callaway County and opening the branch library in Holts Summit.

Why were you interested in serving on the library board of trustees?

I was interested in serving on the library board because I love the library! I want to help ensure that DBRL serves the needs and interests of our community now and in the future.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I would encourage others to use the library! If you haven’t been in a very long time, come and see what’s new. There is something for everyone to discover at the library.

Each library board member serves on his or her own district board as well as on the Daniel Boone Regional Library board, which is the governing body responsible for policy-making and fiscal oversigh
