Why Property Taxes Matter to Your Library: A Note From the Director

head-and-shoulders photo of DBRL Executive Director Robin WestphalAs we begin a new year, the Daniel Boone Regional Library would like to pause and say thank you to our community. The services you value and rely on every day are made possible largely through one essential funding source: real and personal property taxes.

Property taxes provide about 90% of the library’s operating revenue. Because this funding is local and voter-approved, it reflects a shared community commitment to education, access to information and lifelong learning.

It also gives the library a stable and predictable financial foundation — something that is critical for responsible planning and long-term stewardship.

This funding supports nearly every aspect of library service. Property tax dollars allow us to purchase books, audiobooks, magazines and digital resources; provide public computers, Wi-Fi and internet access; and offer programs for all ages — from early literacy opportunities for young children to educational, cultural and social programs for adults and seniors. It also helps maintain our library buildings and bookmobiles, keeps branches welcoming and safe, provides services to those those with few resources and supports the skilled staff who serve patrons every day. In 2025, library program attendance soared to 39,080 and the number of check-outs reached 2,947,435.

Because property tax revenue is consistent over time, it protects libraries from sudden and disruptive budget swings. That stability allows us to invest thoughtfully in technology, collections, and services that meet today’s needs while preparing for the future.

Library funding through property taxes is a direct investment back into the community. Strong libraries contribute to local economic vitality, support job seekers and students, provide safe and inclusive spaces and enhance overall quality of life. Communities with well-funded libraries are more attractive places to live, work and grow.

Most importantly, this funding model ensures that library services remain accessible to everyone, with no cost at the point of use. Your support helps keep the library open, responsive and available to all.

The Daniel Boone Regional Library is deeply grateful for the trust and support of our community. We look forward to continuing to serve you with a strong, sustainable library system — today and for years to come.
