Two handmade felt animal card holders shaped like a fox and a frog, resting on green grass with a blue card tucked inside the fox holder.

September is National Library Card Sign-up Month! Whether you’ve had your card since your 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten journey, or you’re a new cardholder, this craft is the perfect way to show your card some extra love. These critter-shaped card holders will also keep your card (and checkout receipt) safe between visits to your local library!

What you’ll need:

  • Felt sheets
  • Felt adhesive (felt glue, tacky glue or even hot glue could work for this project)
  • Scissors
  • Optional: googly eyes, permanent markers, puffy paint, or anything else you need to make your furry friend!

DIY card holder materials: orange, white, and black craft felt, googly eyes, felt glue, scissors, and a library card for measuring.

Place your library card in the corner of the felt sheet, 1.5 inches from the edges on all sides.

Sizing orange felt fabric using a library card and a clear ruler to measure seam allowance for a DIY card sleeve.

Use your ruler and a pencil to trace the outline of the rectangle shape. Add two triangles or rounded shapes to the top and cut out both pieces of felt along the lines.

Tracing triangular fox ears onto orange craft felt with a pencil, using a library card to gauge the holder's width and height. The cut-out orange felt base for the DIY card holder, trimmed with pointed fox ears ready for assembly.

Take your other colors of felt and cut out the details for your animal. I added white fur and a nose for the fox. Using your glue of choice, glue the face details onto one piece of the felt.

Add glue to the edges of one piece of felt and press down the other piece. If using felt glue or tacky glue, follow the directions for how to use it and how long it needs to dry. It can be helpful to use clothespins, chip clips or a really heavy book to keep the felt pressed together as it dries.

Clamping glued seams of the felt fox card holder with wooden clothespins along the sides and bottom edge to dry securely.

Once fully dry, you can add googly eyes and any other details you’d like!

Finished fox DIY library card holder!
