Birds on a snow covered branch in winterWhether it’s cold, or sunny, raining or snowing, you can still scratch that birding itch in a Midwestern winter.

Winter Wren book coverIf you’re ready to venture outside, grab a copy of “Nests, Eggs, and Nestlings of North American Birds” and “A Key to Missouri Trees in Winter.” While the trees and bushes are bare, it’s a great time to look for last year’s bird nests. With these books, you can identify the nest species and tree it’s in.

Winter is a great time to plan next year’s garden projects. We have quite a few books on gardening with native plants. “Gardening for the Birds” is an extensive guide to native plants and the critters that appreciate them.
