September is full of opportunities to explore this year’s One Read, “North Woods” through discussions, an interview with the author, a community art show and more! It’s a smorgasbord of activities for the bibliophile.
If you’re worried about how you’ll fill the void left in the wake of One Read, have no fear. Join us for the First Thursday Book Discussion on October 2, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Columbia Public Library.
We will be discussing this year’s runner-up One Read title, “The Measure,” by Nikki Erlick. It’s safe to say that “The Measure” is wildly different in style and content from “North Woods.” “The Measure” is described as uplifting and invigorating by reviewers. (I loved “North Woods,” but I would not describe it as uplifting.) Erlick has an master’s in Global Thought from Columbia University. According to Columbia’s website the program “prepares students to tackle complex global issues in the classroom, future workplaces, and the public sphere.”
Erlick has applied that degree to compelling thought problem. What would happen if the whole world got the same message on the same day, a message that determines the length of your life?
Candace Hulsizer, owner of the Black Tea Bookshop, will lead the discussion. Hulsizer is a long-time educator and currently the director of education of Columbia’s City of Refuge, in addition to bookselling.
