Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a library card?

If you live in Boone or Callaway Counties, you’re eligible for a free DBRL library card. You can get a library card in person at any of our libraries or bookmobiles. Bring a photo ID and proof of current address (e.g. a utility bill). You can also request a library card online or via U.S. mail.

I’m trying to log in to my library account (for Hoopla, OverDrive, etc.) and it’s asking for a PIN or password. What is my password?

The default password to access your library account is your date of birth in this format: MMDDYYYY with no spaces or dashes. If you have registered your library account in the main catalog (e.g. to place holds, check overdues), you can reset your password online. If that does not work, please visit any library branch or contact the Circulation Department during our regular business hours at (573) 443-3161 to have your password re-set.

I want information about Daniel Boone. Can you help?

Although we are named after Daniel Boone, our resources on his life are very limited. We suggest contacting the Boone Society or the Kentucky Historical Society.

I am looking for the obituary of an individual who died in Boone or Callaway County, Missouri. Can you help?

Staff at the Columbia Public Library and the Callaway County Public Library are available to do limited searching for articles and obituaries if specific information is provided (e.g. an exact date of death for obituary records). View a list of the newspaper archives we hold on microfilm.

Can I donate books/DVDs/magazines to the library?

The Friends of the Library groups accept donations to use in their regular book sales. Friends of the Columbia Library accepts donations of hardback books, paperbacks, children’s books, music CDs, audiobooks and DVDs (no magazines or VHS tapes, please). The Callaway Friends and Southern Boone County Friends accept donations of books of all kinds. (Please note: the Callaway Friends and Southern Boone County Friends are unable to accept donations until further notice.)

At the Columbia Library, you can bring your donations into the check-out desk in the lobby, or if you have a large number of items, you can bring them to the dock in the library’s southwest corner. There is a buzzer there you can ring to call for assistance.
