The Notorious R.B.G.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has become a cultural icon, and it is easy to see why. RBG has pioneered the rights of women for the entirety of her impressive career. Also, if having a designated dissent collar isn’t iconic, I don’t know what is. First in her class at Cornell and Harvard (undergraduate and law school, respectively), Ginsburg faced discrimination and was constantly underestimated. Through her tenacity, intelligence, and work ethic, she worked her way up in the justice system, winning several victories for equality along the way. RBG is a fun figure to study, and luckily we have several materials about the esteemed Supreme Court Justice in our collection.

Cover of Notorious RBGNotorious RBG” traces the Ginsburg’s path from her childhood in Brooklyn to her current role. This book not only details her career, but also offers insight into her personal life, including her marriage to Martin D. Ginsburg, who she met during her time at Cornell. The two were so supportive of each other, it is easy to see why J. Lo would turn to Ginsburg for relationship advice.

For another autobiographical account, check out the movie “RBG,” available both as a DVD and on Hoopla. You may also enjoy “On the Basis of Sex,” a dramatization of the life and career of RBG.

RBG credits her trainer, Bryant Johnson, for her energy and vigor. Despite three brushes with cancer and three broken ribs, RBG is as strong as ever and can famously do twenty push-ups. Johnson has helpfully shared his knowledge in “The RBG Workout,” complete with full-color illustrations of RBG herself in workout gear.

Learning more about RBG isn’t just for grown-ups either. In the fabulously illustrated picture books, “No Truth Without Ruth” and “I Dissent,” the Justice’s rise to prominence and the obstacles she faced are presented in kid-friendly format.

So much has been said about the Notorious RBG, but she can also speak for herself. “My Own Words” is a collection of writings and speeches from the Supreme Court Justice’s career. She is both a powerful speaker and talented writer with a gift for brevity.
