The Winter Reading Program: Take Time To Take Care

Take Time to Take Care: A Reading Program for All Ages, January 16-February 24

The Daniel Boone Regional Library Winter Reading program runs January 16 through February 24 and is adopting the theme “Take Time To Take Care.” The National Day of Service, which takes place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is our inspiration. During this six-week period, we will partner with valuable providers of care in our community like the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri, Serve, Inc., and many others. On January 16, we kick off with a food drive supporting food banks in our service area. One shelf-stable donation of food will enter you into a drawing to win a six-quart Instant Pot at any of our locations! The drawing for those winners will be held on January 31.

Not sure how to channel your energy on the Day of Service? Come visit our Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Volunteer Fair at three of our locations: Columbia Public Library,  Callaway County Public Library or at Holts Summit Public Library to learn about local organizations that need volunteers to accomplish their mission. Find an opportunity that aligns with your heart and your skills, and start an adventure that will change your life! Additionally, we will be hearing from other community members who volunteer in a blog spotlight series called “What Volunteering Means To Me.”

Dr. King once said: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” We are all interconnected. Our neighbors need us and we need them. Let’s take the time to take care. Though the National Day of Service is but one day, the spirit of the day can be with us all year.

Finally, a reminder to sign up for the Winter Reading program! As in years past, this program allows you to formulate your own reading goals and be as creative as you wish. Whether you check out a new author, embark on a volunteering commitment or fill your day with acts of kindness, we put you in charge of how you complete your goal for this program. As an added bonus, we have a very practical finishing prize for our adult participants who complete their goals: an ice-scraper with a fuzzy warm mitt that will come in handy during the winter months! Those who finish their goals will also be entered for a chance to win a gift certificate to be redeemed at one of several local businesses.

Happy Reading!
